HOOK UP is an original Filipino musical that explores the intersections of love, loneliness, technology, and public health in the age of dating apps.
Set over the course of one unforgettable night, the musical follows a diverse group of strangers whose lives collide through a gay dating app. As anonymous profiles become real people, fleeting encounters reveal deeper stories of longing, intimacy, fear, family, identity, and the universal desire to be seen. Beneath its wit, humor, and contemporary pop score lies a deeply human story about connection in an increasingly disconnected world.
More than a musical, HOOK UP is an advocacy-driven work developed in response to the Philippines’ rapidly growing HIV epidemic. Created in partnership with HIV advocates, healthcare professionals, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community, the production promotes conversations on HIV awareness, testing, PrEP, U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable), and the dismantling of stigma through the power of storytelling. Rather than reducing people to statistics, the musical places human lives, relationships, and dignity at its center.
The musical features an original contemporary pop score and book by Jude Gitamondoc, an award-winning Filipino songwriter, composer, and theatre creator whose works have received recognition from the Awit Awards, Gawad Urian, and the Cebu Pop Music Festival. Produced by Kadasig Entertainment Production, HOOK UP is brought to life by a company of Cebuano artists, performers, musicians, designers, and theatre-makers, showcasing the richness of Cebu’s contemporary performing arts scene while amplifying stories that resonate far beyond the region.
Bold, heartfelt, and urgently relevant, HOOK UP demonstrates how musical theatre can entertain, challenge, and inspire audiences while addressing one of the most pressing public health and social issues of our time. Through the artistry and voices of Cebuano creatives, the production affirms the power of regional theatre to contribute meaningfully to both national and international conversations.
