HOW TO MAKE A SKATEPARK, FROM SKATERS THEMSELVES

Filipinos love building basketball courts. You can bet that there’s more than one in most municipalities across the archipelago’s 7,641 islands—and probably more nationwide than statues of the national hero Jose Rizal.
More recently, local governments are looking to build skate parks for their communities. But building one isn’t the same as erecting another board with a hoop. Skate parks look and work differently. Skateboarding is a different sport after all. For safety alone, they have novel considerations for design. But also in terms of placemaking, its design is particularly crucial to how a skatepark brings together and engages the community.
In this video for Create Philippines, we asked skateboarders from the Cebu skate community to give a few pointers on how skate parks should be built. The video features Edel Castañeda, Bryan Ermac, Josh Salvacion, and Cliff Rigor.
